It is common for families to keep their deceased pet overnight before aftercare arrangements are made the next day. Pets can be safely kept in the home, garage or other protected area away from wildlife and the elements. It's recommended to keep them in a cool place and shrouded with a light sheet or blanket. If they will be inside the home, please tuck towels or absorbent pads under their body to contain fluids. Odor can be reduced by spraying neutralizing aerosols, lighting scented candles or diffusing essential oils like lemon, eucalyptus and purification into the air. Sprinkling baking soda and around the body can also help. The body will become firm within a few hours of death, so if possible, tuck the legs into a sleeping position. And many families take this opportunity to spend time with their beloved pet; to honor and reflect the beautiful life shared. Pets can be safely kept in the home for up to 48 hour or longer if desired.
